What Australia PR is, and why it is worth it

Australia permanent residence lets you and your family live, work, and study anywhere in Australia. You get access to Medicare, most rights of a citizen, and a clear path to citizenship later.

Australia needs skilled workers in many fields, so it runs several PR pathways at once. The most popular is General Skilled Migration, a points-tested system run through SkillSelect, which covers the subclass 189, 190, and 491 visas. There are also strong employer-sponsored routes.

For Indian professionals, Australia PR remains one of the most attractive routes abroad. The key is choosing the right subclass for your profile, building a strong points score, and applying with a complete file. We assess this for you before you start.

Recent invitation rounds and points cut-offs

Round figures change and the Department does not announce dates in advance, so treat these as recent examples, not fixed targets. Cut-offs vary a lot by occupation.

2025 to 26 Health, engineering Within rounds 80 to 90

The pattern is clear. The 65-point minimum lets you enter the pool, but professional occupations have needed far higher scores, while a state or regional nomination can change the picture entirely. We help you target the route where you have the best chance.

How the Australia points test works

Your points score decides your rank in the SkillSelect pool for the 189, 190, and 491 visas. You need at least 65 points to apply, but a higher score wins invitations.

    Main points test factors
Factor What it covers Points guide

English Proficient or superior level Up to 20

Employer and regional routes to PR

If your points score is below the cut-off, an employer or a regional route can still lead to permanent residence.

    • The Skills in Demand visa, subclass 482, is employer sponsored and replaced the older Temporary Skill Shortage visa.
    • After a period of work, the 482 can lead to permanent residence through the subclass 186.
    • The subclass 186 Employer Nomination Scheme gives permanent residence with an approved employer.
    • The subclass 494 is a regional employer-sponsored provisional visa with its own PR path.
    • The regional 491 leads to the permanent 191 after three years of regional living and working.
    • The older subclass 489 is closed, and the 491 is its current replacement.

Employer and regional routes suit people with a job offer or flexibility on location. We check whether a points route, an employer route, or a regional route gives you the best chance.

An honest view, and what may change

Australia PR is a strong goal, but it is competitive, and the rules are under review. Going in prepared and realistic matters.

General 189 scores have been high, and not everyone clears them, which is why the 190, the 491, and employer routes matter so much. The government has also discussed changes to the points test, which may favour younger applicants, stronger English, and certain occupations, and may change partner points.

Australia’s General Skilled Migration program selects skilled workers for the subclass 189, 190, and 491 visas through SkillSelect, inviting the highest-ranked candidates by points, while employer-sponsored routes such as the Skills in Demand and Employer Nomination Scheme visas offer separate pathways to permanent residence.

Factual policy position, Australian Government, Department of Home Affairs. SkillSelect skilled migration and employer-sponsored visa framework, current for 2026. Proposed points-test changes are being finalised.

Because changes are being finalised and not yet fixed, current rules still apply for now. Meeting the criteria improves your chances, but the final decision rests with the Department of Home Affairs. We give you a realistic view and the best timing for your application.

    Australia PR frequently asked questions

    What is Australia PR?
Australia PR, or permanent residence, lets you live, work, and study anywhere in Australia, access public healthcare through Medicare, and apply for citizenship later. The main skilled routes are the points-tested visas, subclass 189, 190, and 491, plus employer-sponsored options. Each suits a different profile. BestMigrationConsultant.com checks which Australia PR pathway fits you and guides you through the full process, and you can start with our points calculator.
What is the subclass 189 visa?
The subclass 189 Skilled Independent visa is a points-tested permanent visa that does not need a sponsor or nomination. You submit an expression of interest in SkillSelect, and the highest-ranked candidates in your occupation are invited to apply. It gives direct permanent residence. Competition is high, so a strong score matters. BestMigrationConsultant.com helps you build a strong subclass 189 profile for your Australia PR.
What is the subclass 190 visa?
The subclass 190 Skilled Nominated visa is a points-tested permanent visa that requires nomination by an Australian state or territory. The nomination adds 5 points to your score, which can lift you above the cut-off. You usually commit to living in the nominating state for about two years. It gives direct permanent residence. BestMigrationConsultant.com helps you target the right state for your subclass 190 Australia PR.
What is the subclass 491 visa?
The subclass 491 Skilled Work Regional visa is a points-tested provisional visa for regional Australia, requiring state nomination or family sponsorship. It adds 15 points, the largest points boost, and is valid for five years. After three years of living and working in a regional area, you can apply for permanent residence through the subclass 191. BestMigrationConsultant.com guides you through the 491 to 191 Australia PR pathway.
What is the subclass 191 visa?
The subclass 191 Skilled Regional permanent visa is the permanent residence step for people who held a regional provisional visa such as the 491. You qualify after living and working in a designated regional area for at least three years and meeting an income requirement. It converts your regional stay into full Australia PR. BestMigrationConsultant.com helps you meet the 191 conditions so your regional pathway leads to Australia PR.
What happened to the subclass 489 visa?
The subclass 489 Skilled Regional Provisional visa is closed to new applications. It was replaced by the subclass 491 Skilled Work Regional visa, which now serves the same regional purpose with a larger 15 point boost and a clear path to permanent residence through the subclass 191. If you are researching the 489, the 491 is the current route. BestMigrationConsultant.com explains the current regional pathway for your Australia PR.
What is the Skills in Demand visa?
The Skills in Demand visa, subclass 482, is the employer-sponsored temporary work visa that replaced the older Temporary Skill Shortage visa in late 2024. An approved Australian employer sponsors you for a skilled role. After working on it, you can move to permanent residence through the subclass 186 Employer Nomination Scheme. BestMigrationConsultant.com explains whether the Skills in Demand route fits your Australia PR plan.
What is the subclass 186 visa?
The subclass 186 Employer Nomination Scheme visa gives permanent residence to skilled workers nominated by an approved Australian employer. You can apply directly in some cases, or transition from a Skills in Demand visa after a period of work. It is a strong route for people already working in Australia or with a genuine job offer. BestMigrationConsultant.com helps you and your employer with the subclass 186 Australia PR application.
How does the Australia points test work?
The points test ranks skilled visa applicants for the 189, 190, and 491 visas. You need at least 65 points to submit an expression of interest, but real cut-offs are usually higher. Points come from age, English level, qualifications, skilled work experience, Australian study, partner skills, and nomination. A higher score improves your chances. BestMigrationConsultant.com helps you calculate and improve your points for Australia PR, starting with our calculator.
What is the minimum points score for Australia PR?
The minimum to submit an expression of interest is 65 points, but this is not the score that gets you invited. In recent rounds, competitive professional occupations such as IT and engineering have needed much higher scores, often in the high 80s or 90s, while some trades and healthcare roles were invited lower. The real bar depends on your occupation. BestMigrationConsultant.com helps you understand the realistic score for your Australia PR.
What was the latest invitation round?
Invitation rounds change, so figures move over time. As an example, a large subclass 189 round in November 2025 issued 10,000 invitations, with trades invited around 65 points and many professional occupations needing 80 to 90 or more. States and territories also run their own 190 and 491 rounds. Always check the official SkillSelect page for the current round. BestMigrationConsultant.com tracks rounds and explains what they mean for your Australia PR.
How can I improve my points score?
Common ways to raise your score include improving your English test result, which can add 10 points or more, gaining additional skilled work experience, completing higher or Australian qualifications, adding partner points where eligible, and seeking a state nomination for 5 points or regional nomination for 15. Small gains add up. BestMigrationConsultant.com reviews your profile and shows the highest-value ways to lift your Australia PR points.
How many points does state nomination add?
A state or territory nomination for the subclass 190 visa adds 5 points to your score, while nomination or eligible family sponsorship for the regional subclass 491 visa adds 15 points, the largest single boost in the points test. These can lift a borderline profile above the cut-off. BestMigrationConsultant.com helps you target the right state and subclass to maximise your Australia PR points.
Do I need a skills assessment?
Yes. For the skilled visas you need a positive skills assessment for your nominated occupation from the relevant assessing authority, before you submit your expression of interest. The assessment confirms your qualifications and experience meet Australian standards for that occupation. Getting it right early matters. BestMigrationConsultant.com helps you choose the correct occupation and assessing authority for your Australia PR.
How long does Australia PR take?
Timelines vary by visa and by how complete your application is. After an invitation, you have 60 days to lodge a full application with documents, police checks, and medicals. Processing times then vary by subclass and case. These are estimates and the final decision rests with the Department of Home Affairs. BestMigrationConsultant.com helps you submit a complete file so your Australia PR is not delayed unnecessarily.
What documents do I need for Australia PR?
You generally need a valid passport, a positive skills assessment, English test results, qualification and work-experience evidence, identity documents, police clearances, and a health examination. Employer and state routes may ask for more. The exact list depends on your subclass. BestMigrationConsultant.com prepares and checks your full document set for your Australia PR application before you lodge.
Can I include my family in my Australia PR application?
Yes. You can include your spouse or partner and your dependent children in the same application, and they receive the same visa outcome as you. Your partner’s skills, English, and age may also add points to your score. Family members must meet health and character rules. BestMigrationConsultant.com plans your family’s Australia PR application together so everyone moves as one.
Does Australia PR lead to citizenship?
Yes. Once you hold permanent residence and meet the residence requirement, usually after living in Australia for a set period, you can apply for Australian citizenship, subject to character, residence, and other rules. PR is the essential step before citizenship. BestMigrationConsultant.com helps you secure Australia PR and explains the route toward citizenship so you can plan for the long term.
Are the Australia points rules changing?
The government has discussed reforms to the points test that may favour younger applicants, stronger English, and certain occupations, and may change partner points. These changes are being finalised and are not yet fixed, so current rules still apply until any new rules take effect. It is best to plan on current rules while watching for updates. BestMigrationConsultant.com tracks these changes and advises on the best timing for your Australia PR.
What if my Australia PR application is refused?
A refusal usually points to a points miscalculation, a skills assessment issue, an English or document gap, or an eligibility problem with the chosen subclass. Many issues can be fixed and a new expression of interest or application submitted, and some decisions can be reviewed. Acting on the right reason matters. BestMigrationConsultant.com reviews the cause and helps you decide on the strongest next step for your Australia PR.
