Mexico visit visa for Indians: two routes
Mexico works differently from most destinations. There is no Mexico e-visa for Indian passport holders. Instead there are two real routes. If you hold a valid US, Canada, UK, Japan, or Schengen visa in your passport, you can enter Mexico without a Mexican visa. If you do not, you apply for a Mexican consular visa. Everyone also needs the FMM tourist card.
Data current as of June 2026
What you need to visit Mexico
Mexico is a bucket-list trip for Indian travellers, from the pyramids of Teotihuacan and Chichen Itza to the beaches of Cancun and the colour of Mexico City. The entry rules are not hard, but they are unusual, so it helps to understand them clearly.
Here is the key point. Indian passport holders normally need a Mexican visa, and there is no Mexico e-visa or electronic authorization for Indians. But there is a very useful exception that most Indian visitors use. If you hold a valid US, Canada, UK, Japan, or Schengen visa or permanent residence, stamped in your passport, you can enter Mexico for tourism or business without a Mexican visa at all.
So your route depends on one question: do you already hold one of those visas? If yes, you travel on it. If no, you apply for a Mexican consular visa at a Mexican mission in India. Either way, every foreign visitor also completes the FMM tourist card, and a visitor can be granted up to 180 days. This page is a full guide: the two routes, the accepted third-country visas, the FMM, documents, the Visitax, customs, and what to avoid.
There is no Mexico e-visa for Indians
This is the single most important thing to get right, because many websites wrongly suggest Indians can get a Mexico e-visa. Relying on that can leave you unable to board your flight.
That Indians can get a Mexico e-visa or SAE online. Mexico’s electronic authorization, the SAE, is limited to a small set of nationalities and does not include Indian ordinary passport holders. Do not rely on it.
Indians use one of two routes. Enter on a valid US, Canada, UK, Japan, or Schengen visa, or get a Mexican consular visa. Both are recognised and official, and both need the FMM tourist card.
Source: National Institute of Migration of Mexico (inm.gob.mx) and Mexican consular guidance, current for 2026. The SAE electronic authorization applies only to certain eligible nationalities and not to Indian ordinary passport holders, who must instead use a qualifying third-country visa or a Mexican consular visa. A complete travel plan does not guarantee entry, which the officer decides. Rules can change, so confirm before you travel.

Your two routes, side by side
Almost every Indian visitor to Mexico takes one of these two routes. The right one depends on whether you already hold a qualifying visa.
Enter on a third-country visa
If you hold a valid visa or residence from one of these countries, stamped in your passport, you enter Mexico without a Mexican visa.
- Valid US, Canada, UK, Japan, or Schengen visa.
- Used mainly for air travel.
- No Mexican visa application needed.
- You still complete the FMM tourist card.
Get a Mexican consular visa
If you do not hold a qualifying visa, you apply for a Mexican visitor visa at a Mexican mission in India, in person.
- Apply at the embassy in New Delhi or a consulate.
- Book an appointment and attend in person.
- Prepare documents and financial proof.
- Apply early, processing takes days to weeks.

Indian travellers who hold a valid US, Canada, UK, Japan, or Schengen visa or residence stamped in the passport can enter Mexico without a Mexican visa, mainly by air, while others apply for a Mexican consular visa in India. The visa must be physically stamped in the passport. Approval and entry are at the officer’s discretion. Confirm current rules before you travel.

Which visas let Indians skip the Mexican visa
If you hold a valid visa or residence from any one of these, stamped in your passport, you can enter Mexico without a Mexican visa. This is Route A.
Source: National Institute of Migration of Mexico (inm.gob.mx) and Mexican consular guidance, current for 2026. A valid US, Canada, UK, Japan, or Schengen visa or permanent residence, physically stamped in the passport, lets an Indian traveller enter Mexico without a Mexican visa for tourism or business. Stand-alone permit cards or paper permits are not accepted for this purpose, only a visa or residence in the passport. The visa must be valid on your travel dates. Rules can change, so confirm before you travel.
The most common case is an Indian traveller with a valid US visa, which is why so many Indians combine a US trip with a Mexico visit. We confirm whether your specific visa qualifies before you book.
How to work out your route
It comes down to one question. This diagram shows the decision, from checking your visa to entering Mexico with the FMM.
| Step | What to do | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Check visa | US, Canada, UK, Japan, Schengen? | Must be in passport |
| 2. Route A | Yes, no Mexican visa | Travel on that visa |
| 2. Route B | No, consular visa | Apply in India |
| 3. Documents | Passport, ticket, stay, funds | Carry for entry |
| 4. FMM | Tourist card | Every visitor needs it |
| 5. Enter | Up to 180 days | Officer decides |
Source: National Institute of Migration of Mexico (inm.gob.mx) and Mexican consular guidance, current for 2026. Indian travellers first check whether they hold a qualifying US, Canada, UK, Japan, or Schengen visa, then either travel on it or apply for a consular visa, prepare documents, complete the FMM tourist card, and enter for up to 180 days as granted by the officer. Entry is at the officer’s discretion. Rules can change, so confirm before you travel.

The FMM tourist card
Whichever route you take, every foreign visitor to Mexico needs the FMM, the Forma Migratoria Multiple, or tourist card. Here is what to know.
What it is
Your official entry record, kept during your stay and needed when you leave Mexico.
Air or land
Air travellers usually have it handled as part of the trip, land travellers must obtain it, and a fee can apply.
How long
It allows a stay of up to 180 days, with the exact length set by the officer on arrival.
Source: National Institute of Migration of Mexico (inm.gob.mx), current for 2026. All foreign visitors to Mexico need the FMM tourist card, which records entry, is kept for the stay, and is needed on departure, with a fee that can apply particularly for land entry. It allows a stay of up to 180 days, decided by the officer. Keep it safe, since losing it causes problems on departure. Rules and fees can change, so confirm before you travel.
Documents to carry
Both routes share a core set of documents. If you use Route A, your qualifying visa is part of it. If you use Route B, you also prepare a consular application.
| Item | Detail | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Passport | Valid at least 6 months | With a blank page |
| Qualifying visa | US, Canada, UK, Japan, Schengen | Route A, in passport |
| FMM | Tourist card | Every visitor |
| Return ticket | Confirmed onward or return | Proof of departure |
| Accommodation | Hotel or invitation | For your stay |
| Funds | Proof of sufficient funds | If asked |
Source: National Institute of Migration of Mexico and Mexican consular guidance (inm.gob.mx), current for 2026. Indian travellers need a passport valid for at least six months with a blank page, the FMM tourist card, a confirmed return ticket, accommodation proof, and proof of funds if asked, plus either a qualifying third-country visa in the passport or a Mexican consular visa. A consular application also needs photographs, a travel plan, and financial documents. Rules can change, so confirm before you travel.

Two things to know on the ground
Beyond the visa and the FMM, two practical points catch Indian travellers out: the Visitax in the Cancun region, and Mexico’s customs rules.
Visitax
A tourism tax for Quintana Roo, covering Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, and Cozumel. Pay it online, all visitors including children.
No vapes
Strong restrictions on electronic cigarettes and vaping devices. It is safest not to carry them at all.
Declare cash
Declare cash above ten thousand US dollars, and carry prescription medicines in original packaging.
Source: Government of Quintana Roo Visitax guidance and Mexican customs guidance, current for 2026. Travellers to Quintana Roo destinations such as Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, and Cozumel are expected to pay the Visitax tourism tax, which is separate from any visa or tourist card. Mexico strongly restricts electronic cigarettes and vaping devices, requires declaration of cash above ten thousand US dollars, and prohibits narcotics. Rules can change, so confirm before you travel.
Do this, avoid that
Most Mexico entry problems for Indians come from relying on the wrong route or missing the FMM, not from the visa being hard. These pointers keep your trip smooth.
Do
- Confirm your US or other visa is valid for your travel dates.
- Carry the qualifying visa in your passport if using Route A.
- Complete and keep the FMM tourist card.
- Apply early for a consular visa if you need one.
- Carry return ticket, accommodation, and funds proof.
- Pay the Visitax for Quintana Roo trips.
Avoid
- Do not rely on a Mexico e-visa, there is none for Indians.
- Do not assume a stand-alone permit card counts, it must be a visa in the passport.
- Do not lose your FMM tourist card.
- Do not carry vapes or undeclared large cash.
- Do not plan to work on a visitor entry.
Source: National Institute of Migration of Mexico and Mexican consular guidance (inm.gob.mx), current for 2026. There is no Mexico e-visa for Indian ordinary passport holders, the qualifying third-country visa must be in the passport, the FMM tourist card is required, and vapes and undeclared cash are restricted. Work needs the correct visa. Rules can change, so confirm current details before you rely on them.
What you can and cannot do
A visitor entry, on either route, opens up a great trip within clear limits. Here is the picture for Indian travellers.
You can
- Explore Mexico City, Teotihuacan, and Chichen Itza.
- Relax at Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum.
- Visit friends and family.
- Attend short business meetings or conferences.
- Stay for up to 180 days as granted.
- Travel on a valid US, Canada, UK, Japan, or Schengen visa.
You cannot
- Take up employment, that needs a work visa.
- Study long term, that needs a study visa.
- Rely on a Mexico e-visa, there is none for Indians.
- Use a stand-alone permit card in place of a visa.
- Assume entry is guaranteed, the officer decides.
For work or study you need the correct visa, arranged in advance through a Mexican mission. We explain the rules and the right path for your plans.

A visitor entry is for tourism, family visits, and short business, and does not allow employment, which needs a work visa, or long study, which needs a study visa. There is no Mexico e-visa for Indians, and a qualifying visa must be in the passport. Rules can change, so confirm current details before you rely on them.
What can go wrong, and how to avoid it
Mexico is very achievable for Indian travellers, but problems do happen. Knowing the common causes helps you avoid them.
The usual issues are relying on a Mexico e-visa that does not exist for Indians, carrying a stand-alone permit card instead of a visa stamped in the passport, a third-country visa that has expired, missing the FMM tourist card, or arriving without proof of accommodation, funds, or return travel. Confirming your route in advance and carrying the right documents prevents almost all of these.
Indian travellers have two routes to Mexico. If you hold a valid US, Canada, UK, Japan, or Schengen visa stamped in your passport, you enter without a Mexican visa. If not, you apply for a Mexican consular visa in India. There is no Mexico e-visa for Indians, every visitor needs the FMM tourist card, and a stay of up to 180 days is granted by the officer, who decides entry. Confirm your route and carry the right documents.

The visa-exemption route, the consular visa, the SAE eligibility, and the FMM requirement are set by the Mexican authorities and can change at any time. A visa and tourist card do not guarantee entry.
Getting your route and documents right puts you in a strong position, but the final decision rests with the immigration officer. We give you a realistic view and a clear plan for your Mexico trip.
