Some countries you just fly to. Others take a year to say yes.

For an Indian passport holder, the first question about a visit visa is not the fee. It is whether you need a visa at all. Thailand you simply fly to. The Maldives stamps you on arrival. Most of Asia and the Gulf is a quick online form. Europe means a Schengen application, and the United States can take the better part of a year. Fifty-nine destinations, sorted by how easily you get in.

Entry rules change often. Confirm before you book. Verified July 2026.

The question that decides a visit visa is what kind of entry it is: no visa, a stamp on arrival, an online form, or a full embassy application with an appointment. Here is that answer for every country BMC covers, with how long you can stay and how long the process takes.

Tap any column heading to sort. Country names link to that destination's own visit visa page. The Checked column is honest about currency: nine rows have the entry category, stay and process verified against sources this release, nineteen have the entry category verified, and the rest are carried from the country page and due for re-verification. Entry rules for Indian passport holders change often, sometimes at short notice, so treat every row as a starting point and confirm at the official source before you book flights.

    The easy list

Where you can go without an embassy visit

This is the list most people actually want: everywhere an Indian passport reaches with no embassy appointment. Visa-free means just your passport. Visa on arrival means a stamp when you land. An e-Visa is a short online form before you fly.

Destinations an Indian passport holder can reach without a full embassy visa, easiest first. Entry rules change often, so confirm at the official source before booking.

    Even visa-free is not check-free

Airlines routinely check for a confirmed return ticket at the Indian airport, and immigration officers at the destination can ask for proof of accommodation and funds. Visa-free means no visa, not no questions. Carry a return ticket, a hotel booking and evidence of funds on any trip, or you can be denied boarding before you leave.

One valid visa can open several countries

If you already hold a valid US, UK or Schengen visa, several destinations waive their own requirement, including the UAE on arrival, Turkey's e-Visa, Saudi Arabia's visa on arrival, Oman and Mexico. Check what your existing visas already open before you apply for anything new.

Check the right visa for your trip

    The one rule worth learning

    How the Schengen visa works

More than twenty countries on this page share one visa system, and getting it slightly wrong is one of the most common reasons Indian applications are refused. It is worth understanding once.

A single Schengen visa lets you travel across the whole Schengen area for up to ninety days in any one hundred and eighty. You do not apply to each country. You apply once, to the country that is your main destination, meaning where you will spend the most nights. If your trip is evenly split, you apply to your first point of entry. Consulates share data, and applying to a country that is not genuinely your main destination, because its appointments look easier, is a frequent and avoidable cause of refusal.

Switzerland, Norway and Iceland are inside Schengen even though they are outside the European Union, so the same visa covers them. Ireland and Cyprus are not in Schengen and issue their own visas, and the United Kingdom needs its own visa entirely. A Schengen visa does not cover the UK, and a UK visa does not cover Schengen.

Appointments, not processing, are the bottleneck

Once you have identified the correct country, the decision itself is usually around fifteen days. The slower part is often finding a VFS appointment slot, and availability differs a lot between Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru. Check all three, and apply as early as the window opens, which is generally up to six months before travel.

    Every country

    Visit visa guides by region

Each country has its own detailed visit visa page covering the entry category, documents, stay length and current process. Grouped by region so you can find yours quickly.

    Before you book

A visa is permission to ask for entry, not a guarantee of it

Every category on this page, from visa-free to a full embassy visa, ends at the same place: an immigration officer at the border who makes the final decision. A valid visa lets you travel and request entry. It does not compel anyone to let you in, and entry can be refused if the purpose of travel looks inconsistent with the visa or the documents do not hold up. Your paperwork at the airport matters as much as the visa in your passport.

Two habits protect you. Never book non-refundable flights before a required visa is confirmed, because appointment and processing times move and the United States in particular can take many months. And confirm the current entry rule at the destination's official immigration site before you travel, because these rules change often: Thailand became visa-free for Indians only in early 2026, and visa-on-arrival access elsewhere has both opened and closed at short notice.

If your trip is really the first step towards working or settling abroad rather than a holiday, a visit visa is the wrong tool. The work visa and migrate hubs cover those routes properly.

    Being straight with you

What we can and cannot do

A good visa service removes the avoidable reasons an application fails. It cannot change who decides.

What we do is check which entry route applies to your trip, prepare and review the documents, and make sure your application is complete and consistent before it is filed. What no one can do is guarantee a visa or guarantee entry. Eligibility, fees, appointment availability and processing times are set by each destination's government and change regularly, and the final decision on a visa, and on entry at the border, rests with the authority and its officer.

    No approval or success rates

No government publishes case outcomes per consultancy, so a success percentage is not a real number. Anyone quoting you one has invented it.

Entry rules dated where we can

Categories and fees move, sometimes at short notice, so confirm the current rule at the official source on the day you plan.

    Gaps left as gaps

Where a figure is not verified for this release, the row says so rather than carrying a plausible guess.

    The decision is never ours

Visa criteria and entry decisions rest with each destination's authorities and can change at any time.

    Questions

    Frequently asked

Which countries can Indians visit without a visa in 2026?

A growing list, but the number depends on how you count. Truly visa-free, where you just show your passport, includes Nepal, Bhutan, Mauritius and, since February 2026, Thailand for sixty days. Many more are visa on arrival, such as the Maldives, Indonesia, Qatar and Jordan, where the visa is issued when you land. A third group is e-Visa, applied online before travel with no embassy visit. The table above marks the category for every country, because they are not the same thing at the airport.

What is the difference between visa-free, visa on arrival and e-Visa?

Visa-free means no visa at all, you simply arrive and clear immigration. Visa on arrival means the visa is stamped at the airport or border after you land, usually for a small fee and basic documents. An e-Visa is applied for online before you travel, typically approved in a few days, with no embassy visit. All three are far easier than a full embassy visa. The important practical point is that only visa-free lets you book and fly with nothing arranged in advance.

Do Indians need a visa for the Schengen area?

Yes. All twenty-plus Schengen countries require Indian passport holders to obtain a Schengen short stay visa before travel, which allows ninety days in any one hundred and eighty across the whole area. You apply to the country that is your main destination, or your first point of entry if the trip is evenly split, and biometrics are usually required. Applying to an easier country when it is not your main destination is a common and serious mistake.

Which Schengen country should I apply to?

The one where you will spend the most time, not the one that looks easiest or has the shortest queue. If your nights are evenly spread, apply to your first point of entry. Consulates share data, and applying to the wrong country is a frequent reason for refusal. Appointment availability does differ by city, so once you have identified the correct country, check the VFS slots for Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru separately, because those can vary a lot.

How long does a US visitor visa take from India?

Longer than almost anywhere else in the world, and you should plan around that. As of 2026 the wait just for a B1/B2 interview slot runs from several months to well over a year depending on the consulate, and an in-person interview has been mandatory for most applicants since September 2025. After the interview, a passport with the visa is usually returned within one to two weeks. Apply many months ahead, and never book non-refundable travel before the visa is stamped.

How long does a UK visitor visa take?

The standard Standard Visitor visa from India is usually decided within fifteen to twenty-one working days. Paid priority services cut that to around five working days, and super priority to one to two, for an additional fee. The visa typically allows stays of up to six months. The UK is not in Schengen and needs its own visa, so a Schengen visa does not cover a UK visit and the reverse is also true.

How long does a Canada visitor visa take?

Processing from India was around eighty-eight days in early 2026, up sharply from the previous year, and the visa requires biometrics. Approval is a separate matter from speed: refusal patterns for Indian applicants have been demanding, so a well prepared application with strong ties to India, a genuine purpose and clean financial documents matters as much as timing. A Canadian visitor visa can allow stays of up to six months per entry.

Can I use one visa for several countries?

Sometimes, and it is worth knowing where. A single Schengen visa covers all Schengen countries for ninety days in any one hundred and eighty. Beyond that, several countries waive their own visa if you already hold a valid US, UK or Schengen visa, including the UAE on arrival, Turkey's e-Visa, Saudi Arabia's visa on arrival, Oman, and Mexico. If you already hold one of those major visas, your options widen considerably, so check before you assume you need to apply fresh.

Which visa is easiest for a first international trip from India?

Southeast Asia and the closer island destinations. Thailand is visa-free for sixty days, the Maldives and Indonesia are visa on arrival, Sri Lanka is a quick e-Visa, and Nepal and Bhutan need no visa at all. They combine easy entry, short flights, affordable costs and strong Indian-friendly infrastructure, which is why they dominate first trips. The table above sorts every destination by how easy entry is, so you can start from the top.

Do I need a return ticket and hotel booking for visa-free entry?

Usually yes, even where no visa is required. Airlines commonly check for a confirmed return or onward ticket at check-in, and immigration officers at many visa-free and visa-on-arrival destinations can ask for proof of accommodation and sufficient funds. Visa-free means no visa, not no checks. Carry a return ticket, a hotel booking and evidence of funds for any international trip, because boarding can be denied at the Indian airport before you even leave.

    Does a visa guarantee entry?

No, and this catches people out. A visa is permission to travel to the border and request entry. The immigration officer at the port of entry makes the final decision and can refuse entry even to someone holding a valid visa, for example if the purpose of travel looks inconsistent with the visa or documents are missing. This is true everywhere, and it is why your documents at the airport matter as much as the visa in your passport.

How far ahead should I apply for a visit visa?

It depends entirely on the destination. For visa-free and visa-on-arrival countries, no advance action is needed beyond your passport. For e-Visas, a few days to a couple of weeks is usually enough. For Schengen, allow several weeks and apply as soon as the window opens, which is generally up to six months before travel. For the United States, plan six to fifteen months ahead because of the interview wait. Never book non-refundable travel before a required visa is confirmed.

What documents are usually needed for a visit visa?

The common core is a passport valid for at least six months beyond your trip with blank pages, a completed application, a recent photo, confirmed travel and accommodation bookings, proof of sufficient funds such as bank statements, and evidence of ties to India such as employment or property that show you will return. Embassy visas and Schengen often add travel insurance and an interview or biometrics. The exact list varies by country, so check the specific destination page.

Is travel insurance mandatory for a visit visa?

For some destinations, yes. Schengen visas require travel medical insurance covering at least thirty thousand euros for the whole stay, and it must be in place before the visa is issued. Many other countries do not legally require it but strongly recommend it, and some visa-free destinations still expect proof of funds to cover medical costs. Given how affordable it is against the cost of a medical emergency abroad, insurance is worth carrying on any international trip.

Can my visa application be refused, and what happens then?

Yes, any visa can be refused, and no consultancy can prevent it, because the decision rests with the government of the destination. Common reasons are weak evidence of funds, unclear travel purpose, insufficient ties to India or inconsistent documents. A refusal is usually recorded and must be declared on future applications, which is why a careful first application matters. What good preparation does is remove the avoidable reasons for refusal, not guarantee an outcome that only the authority controls.

Do visit visa rules and fees change often?

Frequently, which is why this page dates what it can and sends you to official sources for the rest. Entry categories shift, sometimes at short notice: Thailand became visa-free for Indians in early 2026, and several countries have added or removed visa-on-arrival access recently. Fees change even more often. Always confirm the current entry requirement and fee at the destination's official immigration site or mission before you book flights, and treat any consultancy page, including this one, as a starting point rather than the final word.

Where should I start if I just want an easy holiday abroad?

Work down the table from the top, where the easiest entries sit. Decide your budget and flight time first, since the easiest destinations for Indians are mostly in Asia, the Gulf and the nearer islands, then pick from the visa-free and visa-on-arrival rows so there is little paperwork. If you have your heart set on Europe or North America, budget the extra time and documentation the embassy and Schengen routes need, and start early. The free eligibility check can help you match a destination to your profile.
